The practical value of the Porter Equation is diagnostic. If you are building an intelligent company or a portfolio of them, apply the equation honestly. Where is your configuration score? Where is your application score? Where is your narrative score? Then ask: what is the actual product of those three numbers?

Most companies will find a strong score in one dimension and a weak one in another. The work is not to maximize the strong dimension further. The work is to identify and close the weakest one, because that is the multiplier drag that is silently compressing everything else.
